In recent years, turkey burgers have surged in popularity as a healthier alternative to traditional beef burgers. This shift towards leaner protein options stems from a growing awareness of dietary health and wellness. Turkey, with its lower fat content, has carved out a niche for itself in the world of burgers, providing a delicious yet guilt-free indulgence. However, turkey burgers can often be perceived as bland or lacking that satisfying punch found in their beef counterparts. Enter the spicy jalapeño twist, a flavor-enhancing addition that not only elevates the taste but also appeals to spice lovers and adventurous eaters.

Ingredients

1 pound ground turkey

2-3 fresh jalapeño peppers, finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)

1/4 cup red onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

1 large egg

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon olive oil

4 whole wheat burger buns

1 avocado, sliced

Lettuce leaves

Tomato slices

Your favorite condiments (e.g., spicy mayo or mustard)

Instructions

Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, chopped jalapeños, red onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix until everything is well incorporated. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough burgers.

Shape the Patties: Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties about 3/4 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook evenly.

Cook the Burgers: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).

Toast the Buns: While the burgers are cooking, you can toast the whole wheat buns in a toaster or in the same skillet for a minute or two until lightly golden.

Assemble the Burgers: Spread your favorite condiments on the bottom half of each bun. Place the cooked turkey patty on top, followed by slices of avocado, a few leaves of lettuce, and slices of tomato. Top with the other half of the bun.

Serve & Enjoy: Serve the jalapeño turkey burgers hot with a side of sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.
