Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter, softened

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

Prepare the Caramelized Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once hot, add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Reduce heat if they start to brown too quickly. Set aside.

Form the Patties: In a bowl, gently mix the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture into 2 equal portions and shape them into patties that are slightly larger than the bread, as they will shrink when cooked.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, increase the heat to medium-high and add a little more oil if needed. Cook the beef patties for about 3-4 minutes on one side, then flip and place a slice of Swiss cheese on top. Cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked to your desired doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melts: While the patties are cooking, butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On a clean skillet or griddle, lay down two slices of bread butter-side down. Place a cooked patty on each slice, followed by caramelized onions, and finally, top with another slice of bread, butter-side up.

Grill the Sandwiches: Cook the sandwiches over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has fully melted. Press down gently with a spatula for an even crisp.

Serve: Remove from heat, slice the patty melts in half, and serve hot with your choice of pickles and sides.
